About Assad Vala

Assad Vala is the captain and cornerstone of the Papua New Guinea (PNG) national cricket team, widely recognized for his all-round capabilities and calm leadership. Born on August 5, 1987, in Port Moresby, Vala has been the face of PNG cricket for over a decade and is instrumental in the team’s rise on the Associate cricket stage. A left-handed batsman, Vala is known for his elegant strokeplay, tactical awareness, and ability to anchor the innings. Whether PNG is chasing a total or setting one, Vala’s composure under pressure and knack for finding gaps make him their go-to batsman. He often bats at No. 3 or 4 and has several fifty-plus scores in T20Is and ODIs, including a memorable 104* in ODI cricket. With the ball, Vala is a useful off-spinner. Though not express in pace, he relies on tight lines, flight, and smart variations. His bowling adds balance to the team and offers crucial breakthroughs in the middle overs. As captain, Vala led PNG to their first ICC T20 World Cup appearance in 2021, a landmark achievement for the nation. His leadership extends beyond tactics—he’s also a mentor and motivator for younger players like Charles Amini and Norman Vanua. Off the field, Assad is involved in cricket development programs and is seen as an ambassador for the game in Papua New Guinea. With his consistency, humility, and experience, Assad Vala continues to be the backbone of PNG cricket, pushing the team toward greater international recognition.
