About Tony Ura

Tony Ura is Papua New Guinea’s explosive opening batsman, renowned for his aggressive batting style and ability to dominate bowling attacks from the outset. Born on October 15, 1989, Ura has been a mainstay of PNG’s batting lineup and one of their most consistent run-scorers in white-ball formats. As an opener, Ura’s approach is fearless—he looks to attack from the very first ball, often giving PNG a flying start. He is particularly strong against pace, capable of dispatching short balls with authority, and can accelerate rapidly through the powerplay. One of his most memorable performances came in an ODI against Ireland in 2018, where he smashed a magnificent 151 off 142 balls, the highest individual score for PNG in ODIs. Ura made his T20I debut in 2015 and has since become one of PNG’s top performers in ICC events, including the T20 World Cup qualifiers and the 2021 T20 World Cup. His ability to perform on big occasions has made him one of PNG’s most valuable players. Though primarily known for his batting, Ura is also an agile fielder and often fields in the deep or at point, where his speed and accuracy prevent boundaries and generate run-outs. Off the pitch, Tony is deeply respected by teammates for his work ethic and leadership by example. He’s also involved in local cricket development initiatives, aiming to inspire the next generation of PNG cricketers.
